A man was killed after a roof fell on him and a pedestrian was injured when an empty water tank fell on him as high-speed winds hit Gujarat’s Surat city over the past two days.
In the first incident, which took place in the Wall City area of Nanavat, a portion of the roof of an old building fell on Krunal Jariwala (26), who was standing below. A resident of the Wadifalia area, he died late on Friday at the SMIMER hospital in Surat.
Fire officer Balwant Singh said, “The building had a poor structure and due to the high-speed winds, its roof got damaged and fell on the ground injuring Krunal. He was declared dead on Friday evening. We have removed the debris. There was nobody staying on the property.”
In the second incident, a 25-year-old man was walking along a road near the Surat Municipal Corporation’s EWS Awas building at Bhestan when an empty 1,000-litre water tank kept on the fourth floor fell on him on Saturday afternoon. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras.
In the video, which went viral on social media, two men are seen rushing from a nearby building to rescue the man. They took him to a nearby hospital. He had incurred head and back injuries and his condition is reported to be stable.
After the incident, corporation officials from the Udhana A zone removed empty water tanks from all the nearby buildings.
As Surat has witnessed winds of 45-55 kmph speed for the past two days, trees have been uprooted, electric poles damaged and hoardings have collapsed. According to fire department officials, over 25 incidents of tree uprooting and a few incidents of electric poles being damaged were reported in the city.
