No solution in sight for striking Hitachi workers

The latest round of talks held on Monday, between the striking workers of Hitachi Home & Life Solutions’ Kadi plant and the company have failed, according to the deputy labour commissioner.

The latest round of talks held on Monday, between the striking workers of Hitachi Home & Life Solutions’ Kadi plant and the company have failed, according to the deputy labour commissioner. Almost 450 workers had initiated the strike after 10 workers of the company’s Kadi plant were fired in June. The demands put forward by the striking workers also included the renewal of the contracts of temporary workers in the factory and an increase in wages of the non-permanent workers.

“The representatives of the company have authorised the labour commissioner to take a decision on the removal of the 10 workers that had led to this mass protest by the workers. The dispute has been referred to the industrial tribunal. Right now we have no choice but to accept the decision made by the commissioner, but the negotiations have failed,” said Amrish Patel, lawyer and secretary of the Gujarat Mazdoor Sabha.

“Our stand is still the same,we have not fired any of the workers it is just that their contracts with us have expired. We required the workers during our peak production period which is from March till May and now our off-season has started. We want that the workers who still have their contracts to join work immediately. We maintain that the strike is illegal and the workers should resume work,” said a company spokesperson from Hitachi Home & Life Solutions Ltd.

“The talks have failed in the sense that the representatives from both sides did not agree on any of the issues put forward,” said Deputy Labour Commissioner M B Jadeja. A total of eight representatives of the workers and two representatives of the company took part in the negotiations Monday. Sources said many workers are now returning to work as they do not see any possible solution to the strike.
