Four persons, including a one-day-old infant, the child’s father, a doctor and a nurse, died in an ambulance fire in Aravalli district of Gujarat early Tuesday morning. Three others — the driver, and the child’s uncle and grandmother — are under treatment.
The incident took place around 5.30 am when the car ambulance caught fire near Rana Saiyad Chowkdi, just outside Modasa city. CCTV footage from a nearby petrol pump captured the vehicle passing by in flames.
According to the Accidental Death (AD) report filed at Modasa Town police station, “Jignesh Mahesh Mochi (38), resident of Lunawada in Mahisagar, was transporting his one-day-old infant from Rich Hospital in Modasa, Aravalli, to Orange Hospital in Ahmedabad,” when the accident occurred.
A sudden fire broke out inside the vehicle due to yet unknown reasons. Driver Ankit Rama Thakore (24) stopped the ambulance, and he, along with Gaurangkumar Mahesh Mochi (40) and his mother Geeta alias Jayshree Mahesh Mochi (60), who were in the front cabin, exited the vehicle, sustaining minor injuries. The cause is being investigated.
However, those in the rear cabin, including Jignesh Mahesh Mochi, his infant, Dr Rajkaran Shantilal Retiya (30) of Orange Hospital, and nurse Bhuri Raman Manat (23) — died on the spot. The Modasa fire brigade reached the location, but the blaze was so intense that none of the three adults in the rear could escape.
