Following grant of bail to five of the total 10 accused in the Morbi bridge collapse case, two key accused have moved the Gujarat High Court with bail applications. As many as 135 people were killed in the bridge collapse last year.

Oreva Group MD Jaysukh Patel (Bhalodia) moved his bail plea on June 17, which remains to be registered, while group manager Dinesh Dave moved his application on June 14. The latter was registered on Monday and awaits a date for listing.

In the specific roles attributed to the accused, the chargesheet had noted that the two accused Oreva Group managers — Deepak Parekh and Dineshbhai Dave — despite having no technical knowledge about suspension cable bridge work, awarded the work for repairing, renovation to Devprakash Solution, and the contract with the sub-contractor was prepared by the two accused “at the behest of accused MD Jaysukh Patel of Oreva Group”.

In May, the high court granted bail to three accused security guards – Alpeshbhai Gohil, Dilipbhai Gohil and Mukeshbhai Chauhan – and in June, to two accused ticket clerks – Madevbhai Solanki and Mansukhbhai Topiya. While granting bail to the security guards, the public prosecutor at the time had requested that the court’s order granting bail may record that it is only restricted to these three persons “so that tomorrow other accused who are probably sitting on the fence, those fence-sitters may come before the court and may say that others have been granted and therefore parity (would apply to them as well).”
