A court in Vadodara sent five accused in the October 4 gang rape case, in which a minor girl was targeted on the outskirts of Vadodara city, to judicial custody as their extended police remand of four days ended Monday.
The accused, who were remanded to a total of six days in police custody following their arrest on October 7, were presented before the court Monday evening via video conferencing by the Vadodara rural police, keeping in mind the law and order situation on the court premises where a group of lawyers had manhandled the accused when they were presented for the first time on October 8. On October 10, the accused were brought to the courtroom for vulnerable witnesses by the police.
District Government Pleader Anil Desai told The Indian Express that the Vadodara rural police had requested that the hearing be conducted via video conferencing.
Desai said, “Police considered the law and order situation. Besides, the safety of the accused is key to deliverance of justice in the case. Therefore, they moved a request that the court may consider that they be produced via video conferencing. The police did not seek any further remand and therefore, the accused were remanded to judicial custody at Vadodara Central Jail.”
As per the order of the Additional Sessions Judge at Vadodara, police escorted the accused to Vadodara Central Jail on Monday evening.
