The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Wednesday said that they had conducted a medical evacuation of a fisherman with serious injuries from a boat 38 nautical miles off of Pipavav, Bhavnagar, on the Gujarat coast.

In a post on X, the Indian Coast Guard said, “Acting on a distress message received through the Additional Director of Fisheries in Jafrabad, the ICG’s Marine Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) in Pipavav coordinated a swift MedEvac from Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Ambaji, about 38 NM off Pipavav.”

They evacuated the fisherman, who had a fractured hand and facial injuries, to ICG Ship C-419. After providing first aid onboard, the injured fisherman was safely handed over to Fisheries authorities on land for further medical care.

Earlier, on April 24 this year, the coast guard staff on this same Indian Coast Guard Ship C-419, was diverted to aid another fisherman, aboard the IFB Maa Kuldevi, who suffered a medical emergency at sea about 90 km from the coast. The patient, Kalu Deva Bareiya (57) had severe chest pain and seizure episodes. The fisherman was safely evacuated to ICG ship C-419 which then proceeded to the nearest harbour, Pipavav.

In December 2024, Indian Coast Guard Ship C-409 evacuated a fisherman who “had sustained critical injuries on the right lower abdomen while removing entangled ropes from the propeller of the fishing boat”, a statement had said. He was aboard Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) ‘Dariya Dolat One’, which was about 110 km at sea from Pipavav when the medical emergency took place.

At a press conference on Monday, ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani had said, “We (ICG) have made tangible progress. There have been incidents in our immediate maritime domain to which our ships and aircraft have responded proactively and ensured all lives were saved.”
