At least 174 villages across Gujarat and parts of Ahmedabad city faced power outages as heavy rain battered several districts Sunday, majority of affected villages being in the tribal district of Chhota Udepur, officials said Monday.
“As of 8 am on Monday, power outages were reported from 173 villages, including 164 in Central Gujarat. Most of these are in Kawant taluka of Chhota Udepur,” a senior official from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam (GUVNL) told The Indian Express. GUVNL is the holding company of the state government that also manages the working of the four power distribution companies in the state.
The 164 villages come under the jurisdiction of power distribution company Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (MGVCL). According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Chhota Udepur received over 166 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. This is the second highest rainfall after Narmada district that received 168 mm in the past 24 hours ending 8 am, Monday. “We are trying to restore power by evening in all the areas that have lost power supply,” the official added.
Power outages were also reported from urban areas in Ahmedabad such as South Bopal and Shela that fall under Paschim Gujarat Vij Company (PGVCL), as well as areas where Torrent Power supplies power in Ahmedabad city. According to Torrent Power, 300 teams were deployed “for quick restoration” of power in affected areas.
“Despite heavy rain on Sunday, there has been minimal disruption in electricity supply in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, predominantly due to the significant investment made by Torrent in creation of underground electricity network,” the company stated in response to an emailed questionnaire.
The company said it proactively switched off power supply to 19 distribution transformers to prevent electrical damages in Ahmedabad.
“Due to heavy rain in a short duration, there was water-logging in some areas of Ahmedabad… to prevent any electrical accidents, we had proactively switched off power supply of 19 distribution transformers out of a total of 9,182 distribution transformers (representing less than 0.2 per cent of our total distribution transformers) in Ahmedabad for safety reasons. The majority of 19 transformers were in Vejalpur and Vasna areas where the rain was severe, causing heavy water-logging in low-lying areas,” the company said.
