The Panchmahal Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday arrested a man for allegedly attempting to bribe the Presiding Officer of the labour court (judge) in Godhra by handing out a sealed envelope that was later found to contain Rs 35,000 in cash.

Based on the complaint filed by the labour court judge, the ACB arrested Bapu Solanki, who allegedly wanted to ensure that his case is listed on the next date of hearing on December 12.

According to the ACB, Solanki had arrived in the labour court of Panchmahal district which runs out of a multi-storeyed building at the District Collectorate in Godhra.

A resident of Sardaiya village in Virpur taluka of Mahisagar district, Solanki allegedly reached the court and went to the Presiding Officer of the labour court and held out a sealed envelope. Police said that the judge refused to accept the sealed cover but asked the man to show its contents in the open court. It was found to contain cash amounting to Rs 35,000, the ACB said.

Officials said that the judge immediately summoned the ACB and gave a complaint in writing, leading to Solanki’s arrest. The accused has allegedly told the police that he was “trying to ensure” that his case was heard on the next hearing on December 12.

Solanki, police said, had been laid off from his job in the Bhadar canal department of the Panam dam project a few years ago and had filed a case in the labour court.

ACB Police Inspector RB Prajapati, in a statement, said that the process has been initiated to appoint two government panch witnesses to confiscate the cash for bribe as well as to acquire footage from the CCTV at labour court as part of investigation into the case.
