The Ahmedabad City Police on Thursday detained 17 female “illegal immigrants” from Bangladesh including a seven-year-old girl and sent them to the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) in Sardarnagar area for questioning from other agencies.

The operation was carried out by Sola police station. ACP HM Kansagra of B Division police said, “A total of 17 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, who had come to Gujarat between 10 days and 4 years, have been detained by Sola police. We have further booked some landlords for being in contravention of police notifications for not informing police about their tenants.”

Notably, the women are between 21 and 49 years of age with just one girl child aged seven.

Inspector KN Bhukan of Sola police said they found only women as they had come alone from Bangladesh. In some cases, their families were in Bangladesh and in some cases their husbands had left them. Sola police are investigating if any local agents are involved in sending them from the eastern border to Gujarat, but said most of those involved in trafficking them across the border are from Bangladesh.

After being questioned at the JIC, the illegal immigrants are likely to be deported back to Bangladesh.
