Shops and business establishments of the Dawoodi Bohra community remained closed on Friday after the news of the demise of their spiritual leader Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin spread in the Surat city. Chief Minister Narendra Modi has offered his condolences over the leader’s demise.
People were seen praying in the mosques, crying and hugging each other. Thousands of Bohra community members staying in Surat and south Gujarat have already started leaving for Mumbai to attend the final procession of their spiritual head who passed away due to ill health.
According to Islamic Calender Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin was 102 years old and since the last 50 years he was leading the community across the globe. He had succeeded his father Syedna Taher Saifuddin in 1965.
Born in Surat, Dr Syedna had emotional feelings attached with Surat and its people. Now after his death, his son Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin will lead the community and he is 53rd Dai Al-Mutlaq. The birth place of Dr Syedna Saheb has been converted to world International Arabic University at Zampa Bazaar in Surat.
The Dawoodi Bohra community of Surat city have been demanding the release of a postal stamp of their spiritual head since the last three years. Bohra community leader Yusuf Badri said, “We will again make representations to the Central Government to issue a postal ticket on Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin.”
