Rs 20,500 crore spent to buy electricity: In 2022, 74 percent of Gujarat’s power cost went to Tata, Adani & Essar

The Gujarat government paid a whopping Rs 20,500 crore to private players for purchasing electricity in 2022, shows data tabled in the Assembly in the ongoing budget session. Interestingly, nearly 74 per cent of the Rs 20,500 crore went to power firms belonging to Tata, Adani and Essar groups.

With the hike in the cost of electricity bought from these three companies, the Gujarat government had to shell out Rs 8,700 crore more to the private entities in 2022 compared to the Rs 11,800 crore in 2021. The government admitted in the state legislature that the average cost of electricity bought from the private players rose by 32 per cent from Rs 3.97 per unit in 2021 to Rs 5.25 in 2022.

For instance, the cost of one unit of electricity bought from Essar Power Gujarat Ltd rose by 225 per cent from Rs 1.49 in 2021 to Rs 6.32 in 2022.

Similarly, there has been an 85 per cent jump in the cost of electricity bought from Adani Power Mundra Ltd where one unit of electricity was bought for Rs 6.91 in 2022 as against Rs 3.74 in the previous year. The cost of electricity from Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd (a 100 per cent subsidiary of Tata Power) rose by 75 per cent to Rs 4.92 in 2022.

In 2022, the state government paid more than Rs 7,300 crore to Tata Power and its subsidiaries for the electricity purchased. While Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd, accounted for a bulk Rs 6,038 crore of payments made in 2022, the state government also bought electricity from Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (Rs 357 crore), Tata Power Trading Company (Rs 924 crore) and Tata Power Corporation Ltd (Rs 13 crore).

Similarly, the government also bought electricity worth Rs 6,900 crore from Adani Group companies, including Adani Power Mundra Ltd (Rs 5,491 crore), Adani Enterprises (Rs 1,214 cr), Adani Solar Energy Kutch Pvt Ltd (Rs 164 crore) and Adani Wind Energy (Gujarat) Pvt Ltd in 2022.

Apart from these two entities, Essar Power Gujarat Ltd too sold a sizeable amount of power to Gujarat in 2022.

Compared to power worth Rs 218 crore sold in 2021, the company sold electricity worth Rs 890 crore in 2022.

As far as renewable energy is concerned, the Gujarat government continues to buy green power at Rs 15 per unit from 38 entities that include Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd and Adani Power Ltd.
