The female members of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat have jumped to the defence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his aide Amit Shah, who are embroiled in the snooping of a young woman. They feel the scandal is nothing but a well-timed ploy by the Congress party to malign the image of BJPs prime ministerial candidate before the crucial Lok Sabha elections.
The issue does not merit a serious opinion (from me) because it is no more than a Congress ploy, timed with the Lok Sabha elections in mind, BJP Mahila Morcha president Dr Jyoti Pandya said when asked for a reaction on the issue. When the girls father had entrusted the job (of looking after the woman),then nothing remains in that, she said. There is no controversy as is being made out by the Congress and others… all they want to do is malign Narendrabhai, with elections round the corner,Pandya said, skipping the question whether the misuse of police machinery for snooping was justifiable.
Asifa Khan,a member of BJP national executive committee, expressed her displeasure at the way the matter was being discussed in media as it was infringing on the right to privacy of the woman involved. The matter is under investigation and sub judice. Discussing it in public can influence or hamper the probe, she said.
According to her,the two suspended officials from Gujarat,G L Singhal and Pradeep Sharma, had no standing or credibility. They have just given a weapon in the hands of the Congress whose leaders are silent on rapes in Muzaffarnagar relief camps. She said there were more pressing issues that should be discussed.
Leela Ankolia, chairperson of Gujarat State Commission for Women, tried to skirt the issue saying she had not attended her office for the past two days and, therefore, she was unaware of the matter. Jayshree Patel, former chief of the State Commission for Women, took the call only once, but hung up when asked for her opinion on the controversy.
