Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) senior leader Suresh Joshi, popularly known as Bhaiyyaji, invoked the Mahabharat to explain how sometimes violence helped protect the essence of non-violence adding that sometimes actions defined as “unrighteous (adharma)” could help “protect righteousness (dharma)”.

Speaking during the inauguration of the three-day Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair (HSSF), organised by the RSS at Ahmedabad’s Gujarat University grounds on Thursday, Joshi said, “Dharm ki raksha ke liye chahe kisi prakar ke kadam uthane ke liye Hindu samaj hamesha siddh raha hai… Jisko log adharm ke shreni mein dalenge, aise karya bhi dharm ki raksha ke liye karne padte hain. Humare mahapurushon ne kiye hai.” (Any steps required for the protection of religion… the Hindu community has always been ready. The things that other people classify as adharma, we have to do such things for the protection of dharma… great men have done it ), the RSS leader said.

The fair was inaugurated by Union Home and Co-Operation Minister Amit Shah in presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel among other leaders.

Citing the example of Mahabharat in support of his argument Joshi said, “Uska bada udaharan Mahabharat ka yuddh hai. Kauravon ka paksha tha, Pandavon ka paksha tha. Kauravon ka paksha adharm karne wala mana gaya aur Pandav dharm ke paksh mein khade thhey.Yuddh ke sare niyamo ka Kauravon ne palan kiye, Pandavon ne toh yuddh ke niyamon ko ek taraf rakhte hue adharm per vijay prapt karne ke liye apne vyaktigat saari baton ko samarpit karte hue, adharm ko samaapt karne ka kam kiya hai. Yeh dharm, aur adharm ka vivek jo sikhata hai, dharm hai, ahinsa ka tatva hai, par ahinsa ki raksha karne ke liye kabhi-kabhi hinsa ka bhi aadhar lena padta hai nahin toh ahinsa ka tatva kaise surakshit rahega?” (The biggest example is Mahabharat. While the Kauravas were believed to be on the side of adharma, they followed all the rules of war. The Pandavas, who were believed to be on the side of dharma, kept their ethics of war and their own principles to the side in order to win the war over adharma. This teaches us that non-violence is a part of dharma but we may need to resort to violence to protect the idea of non violence. Otherwise, how will the essence of non violence be protected? asked Joshi.

Speaking on the establishment of peace in the world, Joshi said, “Only he who walks with everyone can establish peace. Every community can walk their own paths. But if they do not give others the independence to also walk their path then how will peace prevail?”

“There is no other country except India which takes everyone along. This is our path of “Vasudev Kutumbakam”. When we say India should grow strong, we need to affirm to the world that India and Hindus growing strong is in everyone’s best interests. It will protect the weak and helpless,” the RSS leader said.

On service being a part of Hinduism, Joshi said, “It is a myth that service is only done by the Church and missionaries. The Hindu community and others looking at the community should realise that Hindus do not only engage in religious rites but are also engaged in service”.

Joshi also said, “Bharat will become a Vishwaguru, and not just a few leaders. And this will happen through the deeds and work of the general public. Great men will come and good men have always been there but unless people themselves do not work for it, we cannot rise to the expectations of the world”.
