On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election rally in Anand, the Kshatriya community in the district, on Wednesday, took the pledge to defeat the BJP in Gujarat in the Lok Sabha polls with Karni Sena chief Mahipalsinh Makrana appealing to the community to vote for “Kshatriya brother” Amit Chavda, the Congress candidate from Anand.
The Kshatriya Mahasammelan organised at Anand saw slogans being raised against the BJP and its Rajkot candidate, Union Minister Parshottam Rupala. Makrana administered a vow in the name of Bhatiji Maharaj – a folk deity in Gujarat – to the participating members to vote against the BJP in favour of Chavda, whom he described as the “brother of Kshatriyas”, even as he distanced the community from the Congress.
Calling Congress MP Rahul Gandhi the ‘B’ team of the BJP, Makrana told the gathering, “Everyone has been asking me to comment about the statements made by Rahul Gandhi about raja-maharajas… Who is Rahul Gandhi? Does anyone know him or take him seriously that his statements merit a comment? If he was such an important person, he would have been sitting in Delhi and not you (BJP)… Rahul Gandhi acts as the B team of the BJP, making frivolous comments that the BJP then latches on and earns votes in sympathy.”
Addressing a public meeting in Karnataka last week, Rahul had said, “When there was the rule of rajas and maharajas, they used to do whatever they liked. If they wanted someone’s land, they used to snatch it away.”
Makrana urged the community to ensure that the BJP loses from Anand, which is dominated by around 65 per cent members of the Kshatriya community.
“I challenge the BJP that it will lose the Anand seat by 10 am on counting day… It will be our reply to the insult that has been meted out to the women of our community. We can swear over Ma Bhagwati that we have never voted for the Congress but this time we will vote for Amit Chavda and take him to Delhi,” he said.
