New Ahmedabad NID director has industry and academic experience spanning 10 yrs

He joined the NID’s Bengaluru campus in 2015 as faculty and taught there till 2021 before being transferred to the institute’s Gandhinagar campus.

NIDAshok Mondal replaced Pravin Nahar, whose term officially ends October 16, on October 11, which was an official holiday at the NID.

National Institute of Design’s new director Ashok Mondal, who recently took charge of the institute’s Ahmedabad campus and faced objections from the student community over several decisions taken in the last three days, has been described by his colleagues as being “very straightforward”.

Mondal replaced Pravin Nahar, whose term officially ends October 16, on October 11, which was an official holiday at the NID.
With a doctorate in design, Mondal’s career spans teaching at multiple NID campuses to working with some prominent industry names. He joined the NID’s Bengaluru campus in 2015 as faculty and taught there till 2021 before being transferred to the institute’s Gandhinagar campus.

At the Gandhinagar campus, research-led postgraduate programmes are offered whereas the NID Bengaluru campus offers a masters degree in design for retail experience — for digital games, information, interaction and universal design.

Mondal has a PhD in design in ‘craft culture of terracotta from West Bengal’.

In 2004, Mondal earned a diploma in ‘Pottery and Ceramic Technology’ from Santiniketan, Visva- Bharati University. In 2008, he got a postgraduate diploma in ‘Ceramic and Glass Design’ from NID, Ahmedabad.

While teaching at the NID campuses, he had handled multiple courses such as Sustainability and Design, Form Studies, Material Methods and Technology, Exploring Material Structure and Surfaces, Design Process, Craft Workshop and Design Project.

His profile on the NID website says he has “more than 10 years of cumulative industry and academic experience”.

In 2010, he joined the State Institute for Development of Arts and Crafts, (a Government of Odisha undertaking) as designer and faculty. “As a designer, he has also extensively worked with MSME sectors for increasing their manufacturing competitiveness, developing product strategy. He was also instrumental in implementation of design awareness seminars, workshops and design projects in all the states of Eastern and North-East Region,” reads the NID website.

He has also worked with industries such as Parryware (Chennai), Regency Ceramic Limited (Hyderabad) and Siddhi Ceramic Pvt Ltd (Ahmedabad) as designer.

Meanwhile, Mondal’s Gandhinagar colleagues called him “very straightforward and non controversial faculty”.
