There’s a notable spike in the number of people availing the Ahmedabad Metro on a daily basis. In 2019, an average of 35,000 passengers used the metro services everyday, and the statistic has shot up to roughly 1.5 lakh in 2025.

With the services boasting a record of being 99.84 per cent on time, more than 10.38 crore citizens have travelled by Ahmedabad Metro so far.

The metro services will soon extend to Surat, with a 40.35 km metro line under construction.

The first phase of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project was approved in November 2014. The first 6.5-km section from Vastral village to Apparel Park commenced in March 2019. In 2022, the 32-km line – connecting the north-south and east-west parts of the city – was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi.

In the second phase, a 28.2-km route connected Gujarat capital Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad. The section from Motera to Sector-1 and GIFT City was started in September 2024, while the section up to the Secretariat was started in April 2025. The route from Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir will be fully operational soon, with 54 stations on the entire 68-km route getting connected via metro.

The metro fare has been maintained within the bracket of Rs 5 to Rs 40. With an average fare of Re 1/per km, the metro services have turned out to be a budget-friendly option.

“The metro has become a symbol of inclusive development by arranging special ramps, lifts, tactile flooring and comfortable travel for the differently-abled. For the safety of the passengers, advanced technologies like Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system, fire alarm, surveillance cameras and tunnel ventilation have been designed in metro trains,” the state government, celebrating the Vikas Saptah, said in a release on Sunday.
