TO HIGHLIGHT a rare celestial phenomenon — four Supermoons in four months, from this month to January next year — the Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST), working under the Department of Science and Technology, will organise a statewide campaign of scientific programmes, skywatching events and public outreach activities across its network of District and Regional Science Centres between October 6 and January 3.
As the night skies of Gujarat are set to glow brighter as this rare astronomical event unfolds over four consecutive months, skywatchers will be treated to a spectacular series of four Supermoons, occurring on October 6, November 5, December 4 and January 3.
Officials from GUJCOST emphasised that this initiative aims at inspiring curiosity, scientific temper and a sense of cosmic belonging among students, youth, educators and citizens across Gujarat.
“Whether one is a stargazer or a dreamer, the Supermoons remind us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the universe,” a statement released by GUJCOST said.
A Supermoon occurs when the Moon reaches its full phase at the closest point to Earth in its orbit, appearing larger, brighter and more luminous than usual. This extended sequence of four consecutive Supermoons — often referred to as a “lunar symphony” — is an uncommon alignment and offers an extraordinary opportunity for science outreach and public engagement.
GUJCOST invites citizens of all age groups to participate in the forthcoming programmes, the officials added.
