One person was arrested and two juveniles were detained for allegedly stabbing a 22-year-old college student to death on Tuesday, days after they had an argument about the colour of a jersey, police said on Wednesday.
The adult accused was sent to one-day police custody by a local court, while the other two minors were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board that sent both to shelter homes, police said.
According to the police, the deceased, Alpesh Chauhan (22), was a second-year BA student at a college in Amroli, was on his way to a store in the Kosad area along with two friends – Jay Solanki (19) and a minor. Their motorcycle was intercepted by three youths who were on two bikes. They warned Solanki and the minor to stay put and allegedly attacked Alpesh Chauhan with knives, injuring him, and fled on their vehicles, police said citing the complaint filed by Solanki.
Chauhan was later taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Solanki registered a police complaint against the three persons. He alleged that the crime was a fallout of an issue over “jersey colour” that had cropped between Chauhan and one of the juvenile persons at a shop, leading to a quarrel between them, around eight days ago.
Police registered a case under BNS sections 103(1) (murder), 115(2) (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 296 (b) (obscene act and song at a public place). Further investigation is underway, police said.
