The fourth edition of Shillong Literary Festival (LitFest) is all set to be held against the stunning backdrop of the serene Ward’s Lake, one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Megahalaya.
“The LitFest, which is primarily about literature and literary activities, is scheduled for the 18th and the 19th of November, and we already have got the confirmation that acclaimed authors like Shobhaa De and Jerry Pinto, will be part of this year’s LitFest,” Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh told Shillong Times.
Explaining the unique choice of venue, Director of Tourism Cyril Diengdoh told the publication, “Ward’s Lake provides a unique setting with it’s cherry blossoms, adding an authentic Shillong touch”. According to him, the lake will offer a tranquil atmosphere where stories, poetry and performances can come alive against the backdrop of pink shamiyanas and blooming cherry blossom trees.
“The Shillong Literary Festival has grown in strength year by year, making a name for itself as a prominent literary event,” Diengdoh added, revealing that the festival’s core mission is to nurture a literary culture in Megahlaya and provide a platform for local voices. “Beyond branding Shillong, the festival intends to offer a space for local authors, budding authors and students to connect with renowned authors,” he said.
Popular for his works like A Suitable Boy and The Golden Gate, Vikram Seth’s addition to the panel adds significant prestige. “He was a hard catch, but we managed it. Vikram Seth is the big ticket,” Diengdoh said. Besides Seth, the Turkish ambassador to India, Firat Sunel is also a guest of honor, set to deliver the closing keynote address. Notable musician Usha Uthup will also take the stage on November 19th as a part of the ‘Lakeside Melody’ concert.
According to their official website, the Shillong Literary Festival this year aims to throw light upon regional literature, especially Khasi and Garo languages that have been vying for recognition and inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Underscoring the long term vision of the Festival, Diengdoh shared that they are aiming at building a network of curators and planning more events such as holding smaller book readings, launches and literary events throughout the town.
