Ford issues recall for 3072 Fiesta cars

Over 7 lakh vehicles have been recalled in India in a time span of just two years.

Ford is recalling 3,072 units of the Fiesta sedan in India manufactured between October 2010 and December 2011. The recall is issued only for the diesel variants of the car over a faulty glow plug control module that can lead to starting troubles.

In its official statement, Ford said that it will be writing to the owners of the affected models, asking them to get in touch with their local Ford dealers. The faulty component will be replaced free of cost with a new design, waterproof glow plug control module.

“We have initiated a field service action to correct a product concern on 3,072 Ford Fiesta TDCi vehicles. This is a proactive, voluntary recall action to ensure customers’ safety and satisfaction and no accidents or injuries related to this concern have been reported,” stated Ford post announcing the recall.

Used specifically in diesel engines, a glow plug is essentially a heating component that counters starting engine troubles, especially during cold starts. In July 2013, Ford recalled 972 units of the EcoSport diesel variants for a similar problem relating to glow plug control unit module. However, that time Ford stated that the component only needed ‘relocating’ and nothing else. Subsequently, Ford also recalled 1.66 units of the Ford Figo and Fiesta models in India, although, this time for a completely different issue- which was a faulty rear-twist beam. The recall was one of the biggest in the Indian car market.

In the last few months, a number of car manufacturers have voluntary recalled their cars for different issues. This month, Toyota recalled 119 units of the Camry to rectify a defect in front suspension while German luxury car maker Audi also recalled 6,758 units of the A4 sedan in India to upgrade software in the vehicle’s airbag control unit as a preventive measure.

Over 7 lakh vehicles have been recalled in India in a time span of just two years.

Manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, General Motors, Ford, Audi, Mahindra, etc., have been recalling their vehicles time to time so as to rectify faults, which come to the maker’s notice during aftersales quality check-ups.
