Indian Union Muslim League: A Kerala-Centric Force in National Politics The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a state party recognised in Kerala, emerged from the All-India Muslim League following India's partition. Formally constituted on September 1, 1951, it adopted a new constitution, distinct from its predecessor. IUML's political trajectory is largely confined to Kerala, where it's a significant component of the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), a Congress-led alliance. Historically, IUML's influence has been consistent, though limited, at the national level. Its presence in Parliament has been relatively constant, albeit with a small number of representatives. A noteworthy milestone was securing a Union ministerial berth (Minister of State for External Affairs) in 2004. Currently, the party holds five seats in Parliament (three Lok Sabha, two Rajya Sabha) and fifteen seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. While the party's core ideology centers on representing the interests of the Muslim community in Kerala, its policy positions are largely aligned with the UDF's broader agenda. The IUML’s electoral performance has been consistent within the Kerala political landscape, largely dependent on its alliance with the Congress party. Public records show no major controversies or legal issues that have significantly impacted the party's standing. IUML's current participation in the INDIA alliance represents an attempt to broaden its national political reach. Its future trajectory will depend on its ability to maintain its Kerala base while expanding its national profile.
