Aarya, a Disney+ Hotstar crime thriller, marks Sushmita Sen's digital debut and a successful comeback. Co-created by Ram Madhvani and Sandeep Modi, and based on the Dutch series Penoza, it follows Aarya, a woman forced into the mafia to avenge her husband's murder. Initially conceived as a feature film, budgetary and casting issues led to its adaptation as a web series. Filming took place across multiple Indian locations, with Harshvir Oberoi handling cinematography and Khushboo Raj and Abhimanyu Chaudhary editing. Vishal Khurana composed the background score. Delayed from its initial March 2020 release date, Aarya premiered in June 2020 to positive critical acclaim, with Sen's performance earning her a Filmfare OTT Award. The series' success led to two subsequent seasons. Season 2 premiered in December 2021, after production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Season 3, released in two parts, premiered in November 2023 and February 2024, further solidifying Aarya's status as a critically acclaimed and popular series, even garnering an International Emmy Award nomination. The show's production journey, from initial conception to its multi-season run, highlights its enduring appeal and critical success.
