Trump Pressures G7 to Impose Tariffs on India, China Over Russian Oil Purchases: Report

US President Donald Trump is set to push the G7 nations to impose sharply higher tariffs on India and China for continuing to buy Russian oil, according to a report in the Financial Times. The Trump administration hopes that by raising tariffs — potentially as high as 50 to 100 percent — the move would choke off Moscow’s oil revenue and force President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table over the war in Ukraine. Finance ministers from the G7 countries — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US — are expected to discuss the plan in a video call. Canada, which holds the G7 presidency, has already confirmed that it will consider “further measures” to increase pressure on Russia. Trump’s administration argues that Chinese and Indian purchases of Russian oil are funding Putin’s war machine, prolonging the conflict and worsening civilian casualties. Washington has already imposed steep tariffs on Indian and Chinese imports this year and is now pressing its allies to align with Trump’s “Peace and Prosperity Administration” strategy. However, the European Union remains cautious, wary of retaliatory trade risks from Beijing and hesitant to impose steep tariffs on two of its largest partners. Instead, Brussels is pursuing a phased energy decoupling from Russia.
