Constipation is the most prevalent digestive complaint, and medications are usually reached for, but occasionally simple foods combined can do wonders. One such combination making the rounds on social media is papaya with chia seeds and a dash of cinnamon. Could this really help alleviate constipation? (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)
Yes, this can be very effective for most people, affirmed Dt. Gulnaaz Shaikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane. "Papaya is high in fibre and includes papain, an enzyme that aids digestion and prevents constipation. Chia seeds are high in soluble fibre, which becomes larger when they are soaked and bulk up the stool, making it easier to pass. Cinnamon not only provides a flavour boost, but also has the ability to stimulate digestion and benefit gut health," said Shaikh. (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)
When taken together, they act as a natural remedy that aids the digestive process and relieves constipation gently. (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)
How does it work? Papaya gives a water-rich and soft base with natural enzymes that facilitate breaking down of food. Chia seeds, taken along with it, soak up water and become gel-like in consistency, which makes stools soft. (Photo: Freepik)
Cinnamon, being warm in nature, can stimulate the digestive tract. The combination of all three taken consistently for a couple of days will regulate bowel movements without using harsh laxatives. (Photo: Pixabay)
What should you remember? Shaikh advised that one should make sure to consider hydration while incorporating fibre-rich foods such as chia seeds into your meal. (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)
Is it suitable for all? Shaikh affirmed that this combination is safe for most people, but those with food allergies, sensitive stomachs, or specific conditions like irritable bowel syndrome should try it in small amounts first. "Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also check before adding it regularly to their diet," said Shaikh. (Photo: Freepik)
Papaya with chia seeds and cinnamon is not only delicious, its an easy, holistic way to keep the digestive system on track. Coupled with proper hydration and a healthy diet, it can keep you regular and feeling lighter each day, said Shaikh. (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)
