Patna Sahib Lok Sabha Constituency: Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency used to be a part of the Patna Lok Sabha constituency, which was bifurcated into two separate constituencies after the 2008 delimitation, i.e., Patliputra (Named after the old name of Patna) and Patna Sahib. The constituency is comprised of six Vidhan Sabha constituencies, including Bakhtiarpur, Digha, Bankipur, Kumhrar, Patna Sahib and Fatuha.
Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency made its electoral debut in 2009, and ever since it came into existence, the seat has been held by the Bharatiya Janata Party, as the then member of BJP Shatrughan Sinha won the elections in 2009 and 2014, while in 2019, Union Minister Ravi Shanker Prasad helped BJP in continuing their dominance.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Patna Sahib Lok Sabha, as per the ECI’s announcement, will open their EVMs and ballot boxes on Saturday, June 1, during phase 7. BJP has fielded their sitting MP, Ravi Shanker Prasad, for the second time in a row from this seat, while for I.N.D.I.A alliance, Congress has fielded former speaker of Lok Sabha, Meira Kumar’s son Anshul Avijit, as their candidate.
The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, have gone with the new trend and has dropped several of their sitting MPs from the Lok Sabha list, but at the same time, have retained their core team, which also includes their 2024 Lok Sabha candidate from Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, Ravi Shankar Prasad. Prasad replaced Shatrughan Sinha in this seat in 2019 after the former managed to win both the earlier Lok Sabha elections from Patna Sahib since its inception in 2009. Prasad has served in the Narendra Modi cabinet since 2014 and has held the position of Law minister on three different occasions. During Prasad’s tenure as law minister, the law of triple talaq was also abolished. He will be looking to keep BJP’s 100 per cent winning record in the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency intact and extend their lead to 4-0.
The Congress party secured the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar after the final seat-sharing deal between their I.N.D.I.A alliance member of the state. Congress announced former Lok Sabha speaker and five-time MP Meira Kumar’s son, Anshul Avijit, as their candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency. Earlier, it was reported that Anshul was angry with Congress management and was looking for a switch to BJP. However, he himself refuted the claims and called it baseless. Notably, after Meira Kumar announced that she would not be contesting the Lok Sabha elections, Congress announced Anshul as their candidate on April 23, 2024.
