Assembly Elections 2024: India is all set to conduct assembly elections in several states in 2024. State Assembly Elections are a part of the comprehensive electoral process in India and are crucial in determining the composition of the legislative bodies at the state level and influencing governance and policy-making at a regional scale.
The elections in these states are significant for various political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress (INC), and other regional parties, as they vie for control over the state legislatures.
However, the states of Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Odisha have already conducted their assembly elections simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls, and the results have been announced as well.
In the 2024 elections, eight Indian states are scheduled to hold Legislative Assembly elections, which will be crucial in determining the composition of the state assemblies, thereby playing a significant role in the federal structure of India.
To elect all 288 members scheduled for July 12th this year, with the ruling Mahayuti alliance—comprising of Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party and Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi—comprising the Congress, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) will jointly be in the fray for the of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections.
Following Uddhav Thackeray’s resignation in 2022, the Maharashtra State Assembly has been presently led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, with Devendra Fadnavis serving as Deputy Chief Minister, successfully winning a trust vote in the State Legislative Assembly, receiving 164 votes, with the opposition, Maha Vikas Aghadi, securing 99 votes.
With the tenure of the Haryana Legislative Assembly scheduled to end on November 3, 2024, the state is gearing up for elections around October 2024 to elect the 90 members of the Haryana Legislative Assembly. Presently, it is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party in alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party and independent MLAs, currently with Nayab Singh Saini as the Chief Minister. Ahead of the polls, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be chairing a party meeting in Panchkula on June 29.
In the 2019 Assembly polls, the results had thrown up a hung House with no party able to cross the majority mark. The BJP had won 40 seats with a 36.49% vote share while the Congress had won 31 seats with a 28.08% vote share.
With the term of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly scheduled to conclude on 5 January 2025, the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly is scheduled to go into polls in November–December 2024 to elect all 81 members.
Presently, Champai Soren resigned as Jharkhand CM, as Hemant Soren got bailed and is set to form a government. In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance, which includes Congress and RJD won an absolute majority in the Jharkhand elections by winning 47 seats and defeating the BJP which won 25 seats.
For the forthcoming assembly elections later this year, the state BJP has set a target of winning all 81 seats of Jharkhand, this year; However, former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren slammed the BJP for allegedly planning a conspiracy against him and claimed that the saffron party will be wiped out from the state after the upcoming assembly elections.
Notably, given the present political situation, upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir were among the issues discussed during a meeting of the National Conference’s working committee on Wednesday, party spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said. While Assembly polls in J&K are yet to be announced, Sadiq said, “The Supreme Court has set a deadline of September 30 and we are working around that. We are also putting the Lok Sabha election results into perspective.”
