A day before polling for the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections, two TMC workers were seriously injured in an attack by unidentified assailants in Cooch Behar Lok Sabha constituency Thursday. While the TMC pointed fingers at the BJP, the latter has denied the allegation.
Accusing the BJP of orchestrating the attack, North Bengal Development Minister and TMC’s Dinhata MLA Udayan Guha said the duo were on their way to the booth committee president’s house in Dinhata when they were attacked with sharp weapons. “The BJP has already started its terror and intimidation tactics in the entire Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat. They are carrying out murderous attacks on our supporters,” Guha said. A police officer said a large police force has been sent to the area and patrolling intensified to prevent any flare-ups between the two parties.
BJP’s Cooch Behar district general secretary Abhijit Barman said, “We don’t need to resort to violence to win the election. It is Udayan Guha who has been issuing threats against our workers. He has been provoking violence. In fact, today’s incident could be a fallout of their infighting.”
Meanwhile, the BJP alleged that one of its workers was beaten up at Tufanganj in the same district by TMC workers. The party alleged that one of its workers was hit with the pistol butt on the head and was hospitalised. There was no official reaction from the TMC over the incident.
