Less than 48 hours before counting of votes in the Mizoram Assembly elections was set to start on Sunday morning, the Election Commission Friday night announced that the date of counting had been revised to December 4.
Along with the poll schedule for Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana, the EC had on October 9 announced that counting of votes in Mizoram and other states would be held on December 3, Sunday.

“The Commission has received several representations from various quarters requesting for change in date of counting from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to some other week day, on the ground that 3rd December, 2023 being Sunday a special significance for the people of Mizoram. The Commission, having considered these representations, has decided to revise the date of counting for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to 4th December, 2023 (Monday),” the EC said in a statement. Counting of votes in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana would carry on as scheduled on Sunday, the EC said.
According to an EC source, the poll panel decided to change the date of counting after receiving many representations that Sunday was a day that most in the Christian-majority state attend church services. The source added that this had been factored in while deciding the date of poll, November 7, which was a Tuesday. EC added there was precedence for such a revision, as the date of counting in the 2013 Mizoram elections had been changed from December 8, Sunday, to December 9, Monday.
