Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday called on Kyiv’s allies to impose sanctions on all Russian oil companies, its “shadow fleet” and oil terminals to cut Moscow’s ability to fund its war in Ukraine.
Speaking in London alongside leaders of the “Coalition of the Willing”, Zelenskyy said Russia was attacking Ukrainian energy sites and trying to use winter to put pressure on the country. “Peace is born from pressure on the aggressor,” he said, according to Reuters.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said fresh US sanctions against Russia were working and putting more pressure on Putin, who he said was running short of money, troops and ideas. “Our support to Ukraine is working,” Rutte told reporters in London, adding that Russia’s gains on the battlefield were limited.
Meanwhile, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof also urged the European Union to follow the US example and impose sanctions on Russian oil firms such as Lukoil and Rosneft. “We must also do more to dismantle the shadow fleet systems, and the Netherlands will take its part when it comes to the North Sea,” he said after the coalition meeting, Reuters reported.
