Noted Journalist and civil society activist Kanakmani Dixit has been released after ten day’s detention following an order by the Supreme court Monday.
A division bench of the supreme court headed by acting Chief Justice Sushila Karki said the legal custody as allowed by the special court following his arrest by the Commission of Inquiry into Abuse of Authority (CIAA), an anti-graft body, was ‘illegal’ as it did not bother to go into whether there was any need of arrest.

The bench however, asked the CIAA to continue the investigation if necessary ‘on ordinary bail’. Kanakmani’s wife Shanta Dixit had filed a habeas corpus petition in the supreme court saying her husband was detained illegally and that be released .
Dixit, who also holds the position of the chairman of a transport cooperative board had been arrested on April 22 by the CIAA for investigation into ‘certain irregularities’ after he refused to appear before it.
He had also been admitted the next day to the ICU of a hospital after he complained of high blood pressure.
