A US Congressional committee on Tuesday released files related to late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell that it received from the Justice Department in response to a subpoena.
The US House Oversight Committee publicly posted the files which include 33,295 pages of documents and several videos, BBC reported. The Justice Department had previously released its interview with Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.
A subpoena was issued by the US congressional committee and the Justice Department then released the files to the committee but it reportedly contains information that was already publicly known, reported Associated Press.
However, the pressure on the Congress is increasing for lawmakers to force greater disclosure in the case. Reports suggest that House Republican Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to quell the efforts being made by Democrats and some Republicans to force a vote on a bill that requires the Justice Department to release almost all information related to Epstein files.
“The objective here is not just to uncover, investigate the Epstein evils, but also to ensure that this never happens again and ultimately to find out why justice has been delayed for these ladies for so very long,” said House Speaker Johnson after concluding his two hour long meeting with six of the survivors of abuse by Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell.
The files released by the congressional committee on Tuesday includes audio of an employee of Jeffrey Epstein detailing to a law enforcement official how “there were a lot of girls that were very, very young” visiting the home but couldn’t say with conformity if they were minors.
The videos released on Tuesday by the congressional committee include footage of Epstein’s New York jail cell of the outside area on the night he died in the prison. The video includes 13 hours and 41 seconds of recording from the facility which covers August 9 evening to August 10 morning of 2019 when the paedophile died, BBC reported.
