Trump says he will move to end mail-in ballots and voting machines ahead of 2026 midterms

Trump also wrote that US states must follow federal instructions on counting ballots.

US President Donald Trump on Monday said he would sign an executive order ahead of the 2026 midterm elections to eliminate mail-in voting and electronic voting machines across the country.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “I am going to lead a movement to get rid of mail-in ballots, and also voting machines, which cost far more than paper ballots. Paper is faster and leaves no doubt, at the end of the evening, about who won and who lost the election.”

He claimed the United States was “the only country in the world that uses mail-in voting” and argued that other nations had dropped the practice because of fraud. “We will begin this effort, which will be strongly opposed by the Democrats, by signing an executive order to help bring honesty to the 2026 midterm elections,” Trump added.

Trump also wrote that the states must follow federal instructions on counting ballots. “The states are merely an agent for the federal government in counting and tabulating the votes. They must do what the federal government, as represented by the president, tells them to do, for the good of our country,” he said.

Trump repeated his view that Democrats rely on mail-in voting to win elections, citing policies he opposes. “Elections can never be honest with mail-in ballots and voting machines, and everybody, in particular the Democrats, knows this. I, and the Republican Party, will fight to bring honesty and integrity back to our elections,” he wrote.

The comments come after Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, during which Trump said the two agreed on ending mail-in balloting.

Trump has long promoted the false claim that he won the 2020 election over Democrat Joe Biden and has pressed Republicans to pursue changes to the US voting system. He himself has voted by mail in past elections, and even encouraged supporters to do so in 2024.

Earlier this year, Trump signed a March 25 executive order aimed at altering election procedures, but it was blocked by courts after Democrat-led states sued. Elections in the United States are run individually by each of the 50 states, though Trump has continued to insist the federal government should set the rules.
