US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he was “very disappointed” with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine and indicated that Washington was preparing steps aimed at reducing deaths in the conflict.
In an interview with The Scott Jennings Radio Show, Trump said: “I am very disappointed in President Putin, I can say that, and we will be doing something to help people live.” He did not give further details.
Trump also said he was not worried about closer ties between Moscow and Beijing. “I am not concerned at all,” he told the programme. “We have the strongest military in the world, by far. They would never use their military on us. Believe me.”
Trump met Putin in Alaska in mid-August and later hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy along with European and NATO leaders in Washington. He has said he expects Zelenskyy and Putin to meet directly before any trilateral talks that would include him.
Zelenskyy has accused Moscow of blocking such talks, while Russia has said the agenda is not ready. Trump told Zelenskyy that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine’s security in any agreement and repeated that more sanctions could be placed on Russia if there is no progress towards peace.
Russia controls about a fifth of Ukraine. Trump has said territorial changes, including possible “land-swapping,” would be central to any settlement. Ukraine has rejected recognising any part of its territory as Russian, though officials acknowledge some areas may be lost in practice.
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping has described Putin as his “old friend” during their meeting in China. Xi also spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose energy ties with Russia have drawn criticism from Trump.
