Syria War News Live Updates: Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali confirmed at a meeting in Damascus on Monday to handover the power to the rebel forces after President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was ousted. The toppling of the Assad’s government was a “victory for the entire Islamic nation”, said Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the leader of the main rebel group, HTS which led the uprising.

What has the NATO Chief said? NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed cautious optimism on Syria’s developments, urging a peaceful, Syrian-led political transition. He called on rebel leaders to uphold the rule of law, protect civilians, and respect religious minorities. Rutte also criticized Russia and Iran for abandoning Bashar Assad after their interests shifted, holding them responsible for crimes against the Syrian people.

How did the crisis start? Rebel forces had been kept at bay for more than a decade with Iranian and Russian military support. However, Al-Assad faced a surprise offensive launched from the country’s northwest. His government rapidly ceded territory, without much military defence or help of one of the country’s strongest allies, Iran, which began to evacuate its military commanders and personnel from Syria on Friday.

Syria Civil War Live Updates: UK pauses decisions on Syrian asylum claims

Britain paused decisions on Syrian asylum claims on Monday, a government spokesperson said after rebel forces seized the capital of Damascus over the weekend. "The Home Office has paused decisions on Syrian asylum claims whilst we assess the current situation," a spokesperson from the interior ministry said in a statement. "We keep all country guidance relating to asylum claims under constant review so we can respond to emerging issues.”

The UK decision comes after Germany, Austria and other European countries ordered a halt to asylum applications by Syrians after President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia following 13 years of civil war. The war forced millions of Syrians to flee the country. Most went to Turkey and other neighbouring nations but Syrians also made up a large proportion of the more than a million people who fled to Germany and Austria during the European migration crisis of 2015 and 2016.

In the UK, by the end of February 2021, more than 20,000 Syrian refugees had been resettled under a government scheme, according to the Refugee Council.

Syria Civil War Live: Germany pauses asylum applications for Syrians after fall of Assad

Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has put all asylum applications from Syrian nationals on hold until further notice after the toppling Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, an Interior Ministry spokesperson said on Monday.

Asylum requests will be not be processed until there is more clarity on political developments in the country, which is just emerging from a 13-year civil war, the spokesperson said. Over 800,000 people with Syrian citizenship live in Germany, with the majority having come as refugees following former Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision in 2015 to allow over a million asylum seekers to enter Germany.

Syria was the top country of origin for asylum seekers in Germany this year, with 72,420 asylum applications submitted by the end of November, BAMF data shows. Some 47,270 asylum applications from Syrians remain undecided. The decision comes ahead of snap elections set for February. Far-right and conservative parties are topping the polls, and Germans view migration as the second biggest problem their country faces, a poll by Infratest showed on Friday.

The head Bavaria's conservatives, Markus Soeder, on Monday referred to the BAMF suspension as "the right decision." "We even have to consider how a greater number of people can be repatriated to their Syrian homeland," he said in a news conference.

Syria Civil War Live: What the Syrian crisis means for the Middle East

The speed at which the situation in Syria has spiralled into anarchy defies all logic. With the availability of the best surveillance systems, eyes in the sky, eavesdropping capabilities, and artificial intelligence, there should hardly be scope for strategic surprise in the world of military and quasi-military affairs. Yet, with uncanny frequency, turbulence festers under the scanner to burst out with a vengeance.

We are well past the stage where one could luxuriously explain the backdrop of this hugely complex problem which has the potential to upset the entire apple cart in the Middle East. The number of players in the fray, along with ideologies and multiple other interests, complicate the situation beyond measure.

It’s important to understand the likely immediate effects of the overthrow of Assad. First, Iran’s supply chain to Hezbollah is now compromised, thus potentially delaying or making impossible the refurbishment of its military capability to take on Israel. Read More
