The engine of a Russian passenger plane caught fire with 95 people onboard as and when it made landing at southern Turkey’s Antalya Airport on Sunday, the Turkish transport ministry said in a statement.
According to officials, all 89 passengers and nine crew members were safely evacuated from the plane run by Azimuth Airlines. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 type aircraft took off from Sochi, a Russian city.
As soon as the plane landed, the pilot made an emergency call at around 9:34pm and the firefighting crew and the rescue team acted swiftly to extinguish the fire, reported news agency Associated Press. No one was hurt in the entire incident.
Videos from the incident site shared on social media showed the aircraft’s engine engulfed in fire and firefighters trying to extinguish the fire, while people onboard the plane were being rescued.
According to Reuters, the plane made a rough landing owing to wind shear, Azimuth Airlines said. Russia’s Federal Aviation Authority, Rosaviatsiya, said it was investigating the incident.
Turkey’s transport ministry informed that efforts were ongoing to remove the plane from the runway. The arrival of all planes were temporarily suspended owing to the incident, while departure was taking place from a nearby military-run runway.
