US President Donald Trump opened his family’s newest golf course in Scotland on Monday, using the occasion to briefly address international issues while focusing on what he described as a “passion project.”
Wearing a white cap and black windbreaker, Trump cut the red ribbon with a pair of gold scissors, flanked by his sons Eric and Donald Jr. A small crowd, including around 200 journalists and guests, gathered for the ceremony at the seaside course near Turnberry.
“I’ll play a quick 18 before I head back to Washington,” Trump told reporters after the opening. “There are fires to put out all over the world.”
Eric Trump, who led development of the property, said the course was “a dream” of his father. “He wanted to build the greatest 18 holes anywhere in the world,” Eric said. “He found this land, put his heart into it, and now we have this.”
The US president played the course with Eric and former professional golfers Rich Beem and Paul McGinley. He was watched by Scottish First Minister John Swinney, other officials, former athletes and Trump family members, including several grandchildren.
When asked about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comment that there is “no starvation in Gaza,” Trump said, “Based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry.” His remarks, first reported by the Associated Press, suggest a break with Israel’s official line.
Trump also responded briefly to a question about Russia’s war in Ukraine. “We’re going to try and get things straightened out for the world,” he said.
Eric Trump called the new course his father’s “most personal project.” According to a fact sheet given to reporters, Trump was involved in selecting the land and reviewing every stage of the course’s design.
“He’s going to be incredibly proud of this one,” Eric added.
This is the third golf course the Trump Organisation has launched in Scotland. The company already owns Turnberry and another course in Aberdeen.
The opening comes as Trump balances domestic issues with an increasingly tense international landscape. His five-day visit to the UK included meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and discussions on the situations in Gaza and Ukraine, as well as ongoing trade disputes with China and the European Union.
Asked if this was the right time for a golf course launch, Trump said, “We’ve been working on this for a long time. Life keeps moving.”
He did not provide details about the cost of the project or future business plans. However, he noted that the golf course would bring “a lot of tourism” to the area.
