In a statement following a telephonic call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Joe Biden, the White House stated that the leaders affirmed their continued support for a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The call comes in the wake of PM Modi’s recently-concluded trip to Ukraine and Poland.

According to the White House, “The President commended the Prime Minister for his historic visits to Poland and Ukraine, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in decades, and for his message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine, including its energy sector.”

PM Modi made a visit to the two countries last week, where he emphasised that no conflict can be resolved on the battlefield, while assuring all possible cooperation from India for restoration of peace and stability, as the Russia-Ukraine war crossed the 900-day mark. “The loss of lives of innocent people in any crisis has become the biggest challenge for the entire humanity. We support dialogue and diplomacy for the early restoration of peace and stability. For this, India, along with its friendly countries, is ready to provide all possible support,” Modi said in his address in Poland.

Moreover, marking a historic milestone in India’s diplomacy in Europe which has been roiled by the Russia-Ukraine war, Modi met Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv last Friday and asked him to sit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to “find a way out of the crisis”.

“The Leaders affirmed their continued support for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in accordance with international law, on the basis of the UN Charter. The Leaders also emphasized their continued commitment to work together, including through regional groups like the Quad, to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific,” the White House shared in a release.

In a post on X, Modi said they also discussed the Bangladesh situation and emphasised the need for early restoration of normalcy and ensuring the safety of Hindus there.

The duo also “reviewed the significant progress in bilateral relations and highlighted that India-US partnership is aimed at benefiting the people of both countries as well as the entire humanity,” a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Modi is expected to travel to the US next month to attend the UN General Assembly and The Summit of the Future.
