Iran says a magnitude-5.5 earthquake has jolted a sparsely populated district some 800 kilometers (497 miles) southeast of Tehran. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency says the quake struck around 2:56 p.m. Friday (1126 GMT) with an epicenter in the town of Sirch.
In 2013, a magnitude-6.1 quake killed at least 37 people in an area of the same province where Monday’s quake struck.

Iran experiences frequent earthquakes. In 2003, a magnitude-6.6 earthquake killed some 26,000 and flattened the historic city of Bam.
