Four people were killed and at least 20 others were injured in a shooting at a crowded bar on St. Helena Island in South Carolina, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The shooting happened early Sunday at Willie’s Bar and Grill, where a large crowd had gathered. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found several people with gunshot wounds, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement posted on social media.
“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gunshots,” the sheriff’s office said.
Officials confirmed that four people were pronounced dead at the scene. Among the 20 injured, four were reported to be in critical condition at nearby hospitals, AP reported.
The sheriff’s office described the incident as “tragic and difficult” and said that investigations were ongoing.
“We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones,” the statement added.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those killed or injured.
