The Israeli military said Tuesday that it carried out a targeted attack on the top leadership of Hamas, taking steps to minimise harm to uninvolved civilians. The Israeli Prime Minister’s office, in a statement on X, described the operation as “a wholly independent Israeli operation,” adding, “Israel initiated it, Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility.”
The military did not specify the location of the strike, but an Israeli official confirmed to Reuters that the operation targeted Hamas leaders in Qatar.
Israeli army radio reported that the attack occurred on Tuesday, aiming at Hamas officials in the country. Qatar’s Al Jazeera, citing a Hamas source, said the strike targeted Gaza ceasefire negotiators. Witnesses in Doha reported hearing several blasts, and smoke was seen rising over the Katara District in the capital.
Israeli media, quoting a senior official, said the operation specifically targeted top Hamas leaders, including Khalil al-Hayya, the group’s Gaza chief. Qatar has condemned the attack terming it as ‘cowardly’ and violation of international law.
Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry, condemned the Israeli attack on residential buildings housing several members of the Hamas political bureau.
In a statement on X, he said Qatar “condemns in the strongest terms” the strike.
“This criminal attack constitutes a flagrant violation of all international laws and norms and a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents of Qatar,” the statement read.
“While strongly condemning this attack, the State of Qatar affirms that it will not tolerate this reckless Israeli behaviour and its continued tampering with regional security, as well as any action targeting its security and sovereignty. Investigations are under way at the highest level, and further details will be announced as soon as they become available,” it added.
