Israeli warplanes attacked an Iranian consulate building in Damascus, Syria on April 1, killing at least 13 people, including two Iranian generals and five officers. The strike signified an escalation of Israel’s targeting of military officials from Iran, which supports militant groups fighting Israel in Gaza, and along its border with Lebanon.
Since the war in Gaza began nearly six months ago, clashes have increased between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah militants based in Lebanon. Hamas, which rules Gaza and attacked Israel on October 7, is also backed by Iran. Israel, which rarely acknowledges strikes against Iranian targets, said it had no comment on the latest attack in Syria, although a military spokesman blamed Iran for a drone attack early Monday against a naval base in southern Israel.
Iran sees Israel’s strong alliance with the US – Ayatollah Khomeini is said to have referred to the US and Israel as the “Great Satan” and “Little/Lesser Satan” respectively – as unwanted Western interference in the Middle East, and a direct threat to its security and interests. Iran has been under various degrees of US sanctions since the Revolution of 1979.
Iran does not recognise the legitimacy of Israel, and the two countries have been openly hostile to each other since the early 1990s. Each has engineered proxy conflicts and covert operations against the other. Israel considers the Iranian nuclear programme as an existential threat, and is widely suspected to have carried out targeted assassinations of important Iranian figures, including nuclear scientists, and cyber attacks against the country. The Quds Force supports the Shiite Lebanese militant group Hezbollah militarily and financially, and has used it to carry out attacks against Israeli and US interests in the region. Iran has also been strongly critical of Israeli actions against the Palestinians, and Hezbollah fighters have engaged the Israel Defence Forces on the Lebanon-Israel border ever since the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas in southern Israel.

These rockets were going into the occupied Palestine,” Abu Abdallah, referring to land that became Israel in 1948 rather the occupied West Bank and Gaza, told Reuters.

A look at Iran’s military capabilities as it threatens Israel
The Iranian armed forces are among the largest in the Middle East, with at least 580,000 active-duty personnel and about 200,000 trained reserve personnel divided among the traditional army and the Revolutionary Guard, according to an annual assessment last year by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
The army and the Guard each have separate and active ground, air and naval forces, with the Guard responsible for Iran’s border security. The General Staff of the Armed Forces coordinates the branches and sets the overall strategy.
The Guard also operates the Quds Force, an elite unit in charge of arming, training and supporting the network of proxy militias throughout the Middle East known as the “axis of resistance.” These militias include Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, militia groups in Syria and Iraq, and Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza.
