Gita Gopinath, the First Deputy Managing Director (FDMD) of the International Monetary Fund is set to leave the organisation towards August to rejoin the Harvard University, the IMF said on July 21, 2025. Gopinath joined the Fund as a Chief Economist in 2019, being the first woman to hold the position, and was later promoted to be the FDMD in 2022.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed the development in the release according to which, Gopinath shall be rejoining Harvard as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics.

IMF MD Georgieva will name a successor to Gopinath in “due course,” the IMF said.

Gopinath also took to her X handle where she wrote: “After nearly 7 amazing years at the IMF, I have decided to return to my academic roots. On September 1, 2025, I will rejoin @HarvardEcon as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics. I am truly grateful for my time at @IMFnews, first as Chief Economist and then as First Deputy Managing Director. I have had the privilege of working closely with the IMF’s brilliant and committed staff, colleagues in management, the Executive Board, and country authorities.”

“Gita steered the Fund’s analytical and policy work with clarity, striving for the highest standards of rigorous analysis at a complex time of high uncertainty and rapidly changing global economic environment. She oversaw the Fund’s multilateral surveillance and analytical work on fiscal and monetary policy, debt, and international trade. Gita made a strong contribution to systemic country surveillance and to Fund country programs, including those for Argentina and Ukraine. As a key member of my senior leadership team, Gita represented the Fund with integrity and fortitude in many international fora, notably the G-7 and G-20,” said Georgieva.
