EU refuses to recognize Maduro’s democratic legitimacy in Venezuela

The move comes after Venezuela's national electoral body failed to provide credible data supporting Maduro's claims of victory in the July 28 election.

The European Union’s foreign ministers have declared that they will not recognize the “democratic legitimacy” of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro following the country’s disputed election.

This decision was announced by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell after a meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

The move comes after Venezuela’s national electoral body failed to provide credible data supporting Maduro’s claims of victory in the July 28 election.

Despite being proclaimed the winner by the electoral council, complete voting tallies have not been released. The opposition, however, published results showing a landslide win for their candidate, Edmundo González.

“We cannot accept the legitimacy of Maduro as elected president,” Borrell stated. He emphasized that while Maduro will remain the de facto president, the EU denies his democratic legitimacy due to unverifiable election results.

González, who participated in the EU ministers’ meeting via video link, has the support of the EU’s stance. Although the decision won’t lead to immediate sanctions, Borrell described it as a “strong statement” from the EU, which represents 450 million people.

The election, marked by irregularities and widespread protests, has led to at least 27 deaths. Human rights groups report that around 1,780 people are being held as political prisoners in Venezuela, including 114 adolescents.
