Canada Federal Election Results 2025 LIVE Updates: Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won Canada’s federal election with 169 seats, and US President Donald Trump congratulated the Canadian PM over a telephonic conversation on the victory. However, Carney failed to cross the majority mark – 172 out of the House of Commons’ 343 seats – that would have allowed them to form the government without the support of any other smaller party. His Indian counterpart PM Narendra Modi, in a post on X, congratulated Carney on the win and said the two countries are “bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties.”

Carney hits out at Trump in victory speech: In his victory speech in Ottawa, Carney said the mutually beneficial system Canada and the US had shared since World War II had ended. “These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never … ever happen,” he said, stressing the importance of Canadian unity in the face of US’ threats. “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he added.

What Poilievre said on Conservatives’ loss: Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat to the Liberals and stated that his party would hold the government to account, Reuters reported. Poilievre, who failed to make the election a referendum on former PM Justin Trudeau, said: “We are cognizant of the fact that we didn’t get over the finish line yet”. His popularity is said to have declined toward the end of his decade in power as food and housing prices rose. “We know that change is needed, but change is hard to come by. It takes time,” he said,  speaking to supporters in Ottawa.

I spent time with you. You’re amazing. I am so sorry you are not going to be able to represent your communities.”

India’s current ambassador to Spain, Dinesh Patnaik, is being tapped for the position of the next Indian High Commissioner to Canada, and the process will begin soon, the sources said.

Giving an indication of the turnaround, Modi said that he looked forward to working with Carney to “strengthen our partnership”. “Congratulations @MarkJCarney on your election as the Prime Minister of Canada and to the Liberal Party on their victory,” Modi said in a post on X.

Canada Federal Election Results 2025 LIVE Updates: Five key pledges by Canadian PM Mark Carney

Mark Carney, Canada's newly elected Prime Minister, has outlined several key initiatives to drive the country's growth and development. Here are five main pledges:

Double home-building rates: Carney aims to build twice as many homes annually, utilizing Canadian technology, skilled workers, and lumber. This initiative seeks to address the housing shortage and rising prices across the country by creating a standalone federal entity to supply debt financing for prefabricated home builders.

Tax cuts for low-income individuals: The Liberals propose reducing the lowest tax bracket rate from 15% to 14%. Additionally, they plan to scrap sales taxes on homes under C$1 million for first-time buyers, making homeownership more accessible.

National electricity grid: Carney's government plans to build a national "east to west" electricity grid to reduce Canada's energy dependence on the US. This move aligns with their goal to make Canada an energy superpower in both clean and conventional energy.

Increased defence spending: Carney has vowed to raise defence spending to 2% of Canada's GDP, meeting the NATO target. This increase will fund new equipment, such as submarines and heavy icebreakers, to enhance Canada's military capabilities.

Boosting domestic trade and car manufacturing: The government will invest C$5 billion in trade-enabling infrastructure, including ports, railroads, and highways, to diversify Canada's trade partners and reduce reliance on the US. They also plan to create an "all-in-Canada" network for vehicle parts, promoting domestic manufacturing and job creation

Leading the group is Sukh Dhaliwal (Liberal, Surrey–Newton), who has been elected as MP for a record sixth time. Born in Punjab, the 65-year-old engineer-turned-land surveyor previously served as MP for Newton–North Delta (2006–2011) and was re-elected from Surrey–Newton in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2021. Randeep Sarai (Liberal, Surrey Centre), 50, an articulate lawyer and entrepreneur, also retained his seat. Born and raised in Vancouver, Sarai has represented the seat since 2015, which has a significant South Asian population.

Canada Election 2025 LIVE Updates | From kingmaker to collapse: Jagmeet Singh concedes defeat

After conceding defeat and stepping down as the leader of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh tweeted:

"It's been the honour of my life to lead the NDP, and to represent the people of Burnaby Central. Congratulations to Prime Minister Carney, and to all the other leaders on a hard-fought campaign. I know this night is disappointing for New Democrats. But we are only defeated when we believe those that tell us we can never dream of a better Canada.

I've often spoken of a lesson my mother shared with me: the Sikh teaching of Chardi Kala. It means “rising spirits." Optimism over struggle. This is the spirit I carry tonight. I am disappointed that we could not win more seats. But I am not disappointed in our movement. I am hopeful for our Party. I KNOW that we will always choose hope over fear.

New Democrats built this country. We have built the best of Canada. And we aren’t going anywhere."

Canada Election 2025 LIVE Updates: Here's a recap of the polls and results so far

    Who did Canadians vote for?

Canadians voted for all 343 member of the House of Commons, one for each constituency.

The winning candidates were those who finished first, whether or not they won a majority of the votes.

A party needs 172 seats in Parliament for a majority.

When will Canada have a new prime minister?

The prime minister is chosen by parliament rather than elected directly by the voters.

Historically, the party that assembles a majority in the House of Commons — either alone or with the support of another party — forms a government. That's expected to happen in coming days.

The leader of the party forming the government will be the new primer minister, who then has to pick a cabinet.

The current liberal leader is Carney, who was sworn in on March 14 as prime minister after Justin Trudeau resigned. Now, he won a full term as the head of the government.

Canada Election 2025 LIVE Updates: Carney wins at a time when Canada is also dealing with another crisis.

In addition to the trade war with the US and frosty relationship with Trump, Canada is dealing with a cost-of-living crisis. And more than 75 per cent of its exports go to the US, so Trump's tariffs threat and his desire to get North American automakers to move Canada's production south could severely damage the Canadian economy.

While campaigning, Carney vowed that every dollar the the government collects from counter-tariffs on US goods will go toward Canadian workers who are adversely affected by the trade war. He also said he plans to keep dental care in place, offer a middle-class tax cut, return immigration to sustainable levels and increase funding to Canada's public broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
