Bangladesh gets interim govt led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Here’s a list of the other advisors

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on Thursday. This move follows the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amidst widespread protests demanding her removal.

Along with Yunus, 16 additional advisers also join him in the interim government. While 13 of these were administered oath by President Mohammad Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban, the presidential palace, Supradip Chakma, Bidhan Ranjan Roy, and Faruk-e-Azam are outside the capital, so they could not be sworn in today.

Here’s a list of the advisors:

1. Saleh Uddin Ahmed – Dr Salehuddin Ahmed was the 9th governor of the Bangladesh Bank. While serving as the governor from May 1, 2005 to April 30, 2009, Dr Ahmed is credited for implemented reforms intended to bringing discipline in banking sector and modernising the central bank’s
operations.

Dr Ahmed’s career spans across academics, Bangladesh administration. He began his career as a lecturer in Economics at Dhaka University in 1970. Later, Dr Ahmed joined the then Civil Service of Pakistan in 1971. After a year, he returned to Dhaka University as a lecturer. He held several positions in Bangladesh administration including serving as the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Pirojpur, Dhaka Tribune reported.

2. Dr Asif Nazrul – Asif Nazrul is a professor of law at Dhaka University and is regarded as a vocal critic of Bangladesh politics. Nazrul has over 10 novels and nonfiction books on law, constitution and human rights to his credit. He pursued LLB and LLB at University of Dhaka in 1986, 1987 respectively and did his PhD from University of London in 1999.

Apart from these, he completed post-doctoral research at Environmental Law Center in Germany. Nazrul had a short stint as a magistrate. From 2011, Nazrul served as a bureau member of ‘South Asian for Human Rights’ for six years. Though, he worked with Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee in 1992, he later distanced himself from it, bdnews24.com report said.

3. Adilur Rahman Khan – Adilur Rahman Khan works as a Supreme Court lawyer in Bangladdesh and is also the secretary of human rights organisation Odhikar, founded in 1994. He had served as a deputy attorney general during the last tenure of BNP-led government. Khan pursued law at Dhaka University and took part in the democratic movement against Lieutenant General Hussian Mohammad Ershad, The Daily Star report said.

4. AF Hasan Arif – AF Hassan Ariff is a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and had served as office of attorney general from October 2001 to April 2005. He had served as the Law Adviser (Cabinet Minister) of then interim government of Bangladesh from January 2008 to 2009. He began practising law at Calcutta High Court in 1967.

5. Tauhid Hossain – Former Foreign Secretary, with extensive experience in international diplomacy.

6. Syeda Rizwana Hasan – Syeda Rizwana Hasan is a lawyer and environmentalist. The Ramon Magsasay awardee is the chief executive of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association. Regarded for her work on environmental issues such as deforestation, pollution and illegal land development, she was named a ‘Hero of the Environment’ by Time magazine. She is also the chief executive of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association, bd4news24 reported.

7. Md. Nahid Islam -Nahid Islam represents the student leaders of the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement and he is a sociology student at Dhaka University. Born in 1988, he is a student of 2016-17 batch at the University, according to Dhaka Tribune.

8. Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan – Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan is also one of the coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. Bhuiyan pursued his graduation and post graduation from the Department of Linguistics, Dhaka University. Prior to that, Bhuiyan studied in Adamjee
Cantonment College and is a member secretary of Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti, bd4news24 report said.

9. Brigadier General (retd) M. Sakhawat Hossain – Former Election Commissioner, with a background in military and electoral administration.

10. Supradip Chakma – Supradip Chakma earlier served as the Bangladesh ambassador to Vietnam and Mexico. Currently, he is the chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board. He held multiple positions at the Bangladesh Embassy in Rabat, the Bangladesh High Commission in Colombo, the Bangladesh Embassy in Brussels, and the Bangladesh Embassy in Ankara. He pursued marketing at Dhaka University, The Daily Star reported.

11. Farida Akhtar – Farida Akhter serves as the Executive Director of UBINIG, Policy Research for Development Alternative. A writer, coloumnist, Farida has endevoured in the fields of women empowerment, health, agriculture, fisheries, textile, garment industry aming others. The economic gradute from Chittagong University is a socio-economic researcher, bdnews24 report said.

12. Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy – Former Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, recognized for his contributions to mental health.

13. Khalid Hasan – Khalid Hasan is a Sunni Deobandi Islamic scholar and education advisor to Islami Andolan. He completed his PhD on ‘Khutba of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH): A Socio-cultural Study’.

14. Noorjahan Begum – According to The Daily Star, Noorjahan Begum is one of the earliest associates of Muhammad Yunus during the setting up of Grameen Bank in 1976. The Chittagong University student played key role in organising poor rural women in Grameen Bank’s grassroots groups.

15. Sharmin Murshid – Chief Executive Officer of Brati, a key player in non-profit and social initiatives.

16. Farooq-e-Azam Vir Prateek – Deputy Commander of Operation Jackpot during the Liberation War, celebrated for his role in the country’s independence movement.

Yunus, 84, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his pioneering work in microcredit and microfinance through the Grameen Bank. He was sworn in just hours after returning to Dhaka from Paris, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
