Punjab has a long history of serving as a bellwether during Lok Sabha Elections, predicting the path of the incoming government and reflecting broader national trends. The nation was struck by the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) unexpected triumph in 2014, and the BJP’s impressive performance in 2019 demonstrated its nationwide wave.
The elections in Punjab are not a contest between two parties or alliance, but a battle of multiple parties like Congress, a powerful and established party in the state, the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Even after suffering a defeat in the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP is still a formidable opponent. Regional actors like the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also make the landscape of the state’s politics even more complex.
As per the announcement made by the ECI (Election Commission of India), the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections for all the seats of the “Land of Five Rivers,” will be contested on June 1.
Phase 7: Date of polling- June 1
The General Elections in the Land of Five Rivers are historically contested in only one phase, which will be the case again in 2024, as the state of Punjab is scheduled to have thier Lok Sabha polling in a single phase.
The state of Punjab ranks 16th in the list of states with the most number of Lok Sabha seats among the Indian states, as it has a total of 13 Lok Sabha seats in account, out of which four seats are reserved for SC candidates, while nine seats are unreserved. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, INC-led UPA alliance came out as the biggest alliance after winning eight seats, while NDA only managed to win four seats. The first time contesting AAP were also able to win one seat for themselves.

The situation of Lok Sabha Elections in Punjab is going to be very different in 2024, than that of 2019, as AAP who only won one seat last time are now the ruling party in the state assembly, while the popularity of INC has dropped significantly in the last five years. BJP will also be contesting the elections alone without SAD, who decided to part ways with the NDA in 2023. AAP and INC, despite being the part of newly formed I.N.D.I.A alliance will be contesting the elections as opposition in the “Land of Five Rivers.”
