As Delhi’s air quality deteriorates ahead of winter, air pollution and its management has taken centre stage in the national capital, raising concern among residents and health experts. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to remain in the “Poor” category over the next three days.

Currently, the AQI stands at 267, with many areas already facing concerning pollution levels. Some of the city’s most polluted areas include Anand Vihar, Mundka and Loni.

In light of the deterioration in air quality, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has banned the manufacturing, storage, selling, including delivery through online platforms, and bursting of all kinds of firecrackers in the National Capital Territory of Delhi until January 1, 2025. The ban is part of the Delhi government’s 21-point Winter Action Plan.

There are six categories of AQI, namely ‘Good’ (0-50), ‘Satisfactory’ (50-100), ‘Moderately polluted’ (100-200), ‘Poor’ (200-300), ‘Very Poor’ (300-400), and ‘Severe’ (400-500).

What is the air quality in other major cities today?

‘Moderate’: Kolkata

Kolkata’s air quality remains in the “Moderate” category with an AQI of 161, unchanged from the previous day. While this level is not critically harmful, it poses potential risks for individuals sensitive to air pollution.

‘Satisfactory’: Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Pune

Ahmedabad’s AQI stands at 62. The bulletin also reports that Ahmedabad’s air quality is likely to stay in the “Satisfactory” range for the next two days.

The overall air quality of Mumbai was observed in Satisfactory category with AQI 79, while Pune stands at 57.
