On Tuesday, a sudden flash flood triggered by a cloudburst in the Kheer Ganga river catchment area caused devastation across parts of Uttarakhand, sweeping away several houses, shops, and roads.
Two separate cloudburst incidents were reported, one in Dharali and another in the Sukhi Top area, resulting in widespread destruction. Dharali village suffered the most severe impact, following which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert for heavy rainfall across the state, particularly warning the hill districts to remain on high alert.
A joint rescue and relief operation involving 201 personnel from the Army, ITBP, Police, Revenue Department, BRO, and ambulance services was immediately deployed. To support aerial rescue efforts, helipad operations have been activated at Jhala, and warnings have been issued to residents living near riverbanks in Bhattwadi, Gangori, and Uttarkashi.
Several colleges in the region have been turned into relief shelters and camps to accommodate displaced residents.
