Idli served with sambar and coconut chutney is a South Indian staple, a must try. Idli has varieties –– podi idli, mini idli, rava idli, Ramaserry idli, and more. Now, a new variety, an “idli sandwich,” is making waves on the Internet, leaving foodies appalled.
A viral video shows a street vendor preparing the “unique” dish. The vendor starts by stuffing a potato mix between two idlis, giving it a “sandwich twist”. He then dips it in a batter made of gram flour, deep fries it, and serves the idli sandwich with sambar and coconut chutney. Stand-up comedian Rohan Shah shared the video on Instagram saying, “Have they gone too far with idli?”

The video gained traction soon, garnering over two million views on the platform. A user wrote, “How to make healthy food unhealthy… Learn from them!” Another user commented, “I’ll also join idli bachao andolan…I can’t see this torture with idli.”
“You are absolutely right. People are spoiling traditional receipes in the name of creativity,” a third user reacted. “Justice for idli,” another user wrote.
Earlier, a video of a street vendor making ice cream dosa set social media abuzz, prompting a reaction from business tycoon Anand Mahindra. The video showed the vendor selling dosas filled with ice cream instead of veggies. “Not a fan of ice cream dosas, but full marks to this gentleman’s inventiveness. In fact Indian street vendors are an inexhaustible source of innovation. All the product design teams in our Group should regularly visit vendors & draw inspiration from them!” Mahindra wrote.
A video showing dry fruits dosa was also circulated widely on social media.
