A State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Rajasthan’s Pali caught the Internet’s attention when a customer shared a picture of the empty counters. The customer, who visited the branch at 3 pm, highlighted the jokes and memes around SBI and lunch breaks its employees take.

“It was 3 PM, and the whole staff was on lunch. Irony, on one side SBI says we don’t have any lunch break and the whole staff was on lunch collectively. Dear SBI, even the world can get changed completely but your services can’t,” the customer wrote.

“No one has problem lunch. Problem is with work culture, jab marji to tab lunch break chalte hai (Whenever you want, you go on lunch breaks). SBI has rule, there is no lunch break, instead employee should take lunch break in rotational basis so there is no impact on service, but nahi sabhi ko ek sath jana hai (but no, everyone has to go together,” he wrote in a subsequent post.

Responding to the customer, the bank apologised for the inconvenience but also asked him to delete the photos citing photography is prohibited inside the bank premises. “We regret the inconvenience caused to you. However, please note that photography/videography inside branch premises is prohibited due to security reasons. You may be held accountable if these are misused. Therefore, we recommend you remove these from the social media sites,” the bank wrote. In another post, the handle wrote “Immediately”.

The customer’s post sparked a debate on social media as a section of social media users emphasised on the importance of lunch breaks. “Clearly another case of getting impressions with SBI lunch time jokes. Seriously man, do better. Lunch is a basic human need, why make so much fuss about it. There are a lot of service providers in the market. If you don’t like SBI’s service, move on instead of whining,” a user wrote.

“No one recognizes how hard the bank employees work. At least, they should have the right to eat food,” another user commented.

Another user, however, supported the customer. “This is an old issue with Govt Banks .. not only SBI .. I have grown up seeing this .. I am 45 now .. I will die seeing this .. I don’t expect any change,” he wrote.
